Nearly every day, all day, I’ve been tuned into the Olympics. I love that every four years the world’s best come together to compete and demonstrate great feats of sportsmanship to a global audience. I was particularly moved this year by the Olympics’ focus on sustainability, as well as peace and acceptance. Truly a lesson for us all.
I also enjoy learning more about the athletes who train, and seeing how overall wellness is important to them: eating right, training hard, and self-care. Whether it’s meditation and pre-competition focusing routines, or recovery activities and treatments like cupping, an overall view of health is becoming more and more important to many people around the world. It is helping them to stay healthier and in top condition longer. I loved hearing about Kristin Armstrong’s third gold medal in cycling at age 42 (just one day before her 43rd birthday) and Oksana Chusovitina, a 41-year-old gymnast competing for Uzbekistan is at her 7th Olympics. No longer is a single Olympics the pinnacle of an athlete’s career. Staying healthy by including self-care helps us all achieve more and reach our personal goals for a longer amount of time. I’m up for that.
Closer to home, we focus on one athlete that is a fan of our Matt’s Best Defense Soap. Leah Letson has been an athlete from a very young age when she started Karate, earning advanced degree black belts in both Karate and Tae Kwo Do before she was 14. Today, as an instructor in kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), a Surveillance Technician in the Air National Guard, and an up-and-coming fighter in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), she just won her third professional match on July 30, with a first round TKO. This very smart and accomplished young woman knows the importance of focusing on all aspects of her health. In her own words:
"Overall health is very important to me as a person and athlete. If I am not taking care of my body, I cannot perform to the best of my ability. I make sure to keep my body in peak physical condition by doing a variety of workouts, eating clean, and keeping great personal hygiene. If I don’t take good care of myself, not only does it affect my physical abilities, but it also negatively impacts my mental and emotional health. I tend to have significantly less motivation and energy while doing everyday tasks when I don’t take good care of myself. I find that I am a lot more productive in every aspect of life when I am healthy. Because I can accomplish so much more by staying healthy, I always encourage others to maintain a healthy lifestyle so that they too can feel good and accomplish their goals.
“As an MMA fighter, I spend a lot of time in close contact with many individuals. Grappling/wrestling mats are known for harboring viruses and bacteria that can cause skin diseases. Even if the mats are cleaned frequently, when 30+ sweaty individuals are rolling around on the floor, it is very easy to develop skin conditions. Matt’s Best Defense is the only soap I have ever found that can prevent and clear up skin conditions like mat acne, ringworm and MRSA.* Therefore, I make sure to shower using Matt’s Best Defense after every training session. Since I started using Matt’s Best Defense, I have had absolutely no problems with infections or any other skin conditions.”
We love to help Leah stay healthy so she can stay focused on her goals.
